Today's Golfer Tips

I don't know how many of you go to your local bookstore to pick up a golf magazine, but next time you're in a Borders or Barnes and Noble, look in back for Today's Golfer and give that a read instead of the repetitious American magazines.

Today's Golfer is British and they have a very refreshing take on the game compared to American publications. (and you won't get 100 ways to fix your slice every month)

The link above is from their web site (I got it from an email they send each week) and it has some very simple and helpful tips for your game. The video is a loop of several tips, so let it run a little bit. I found three I want to try.

While you're looking for Today's Golfer, see if they have a copy of GolfPunk. This is my favorite golf magazine - period. Great humor, very British, and a fun view of the game - but not disrespectful. I wish we got Bunkered - Scotland's golf magazine - but it's a little harder to find.

Capt

The AP cutline describes this scene thusly: "Fans watch with Australia's flag as Rachel Hetherington, of Australia, shoots from the fourth tee Friday, June 27, 2008, during the second round of the U.S. Women's Open golf championship at the Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn."

But the ladies in this photo are no ordinary fans (and not just because they dress funny); they are (from left) Stephanie Na, Stacey Keating and Kristie Smith, three young Aussie golfers of note. Na and Keating are top Australian amateurs, Smith made it to the final stage of LPGA qualifying last December. All three are around 19 years old. On Day 1 they were out in the same costumes following Karrie Webb.

In fact, they spent the week prior to the Women's Open hanging with Webb, watching her prepare and practice, a trip paid for in part with $10,000 (AUD) travel stipends to Na and Smith from the Australian national team.

One reason such a relatively tiny country (population-wise) turns out so many great golfers is the Australian golf bodies' willingness to do things such as this, and the willingness of veteran Aussie golfers to take an interest in the youngsters. Fifteen years from now, it might be Na or Smith who is mentoring a group of young golfers who traveled from Down Under to the U.S. Women's Open.

Tiger Woods US Open memorabilia on Ebay

This is one of the funniest things I've seen in a very long time. Is it real ? Beats me - but it's funny. When you're done reading the article, do a search on Ebay for Tiger Woods apple core. You won't get this one, but the copy cats are hilarious.

Rocco gets it right

I don't know about your areas, but I have been listening to local and national talk show hosts run to the defense of Rocco Mediate over Johhny Miller's really dumb statements during the US Open. (I'm not going to repeat them - if you haven't heard and just have to know, they are in he story linked above)

Not a huge surprise to most of you, but I can't stand Johnny Miller. Don't like his arrogant commentary. Don't like his made up shot names. Don't like his 20/20 hindsite analysis to rag on a player who misses a shot. (Johnny seems to think that a missed shot was the intended shot)

However, his stupid statements aren't worth the rhubarb of commentary that is going on by lazy, bored talk show hosts who will blow any mole hill into a mountain at the drop of a hat. (two Italian groups have even called for his suspension or firing)

Rocco - on the other hand - gets it right. He doesn't care. He doesn't believe that Miller intended any serious insult by his words and dismisses any calls for his action against Miller.

Well done Rocco - maybe Johnny should tatoo your name on his arm to remind him how to lighten up and have a little more fun with the broadcasts.

Slazenger Raw commercials

Ok - what's wrong with this picture ? We've all seen the commercials where the two roid raging golfers stop to see the very zesty "Kitty" at the snack shack.

What I see are two muscle headed guys bullying the "preppy" guy - BUT - the muscle headed guys are doing what at the turn ? One guy gets a dozen new Slazengers - the other guy needs TWO dozen...after nine holes !!!! Hmmm..
